Why Minimalism Is The Best Thing Right Now
You might be thinking… what am I supposed to do with all this stuff I have lying around? It’s picking up dust and not even giving me any joy. It just gives me stress and makes me unhappy.
That is exactly what I thought two years ago, around December, which is exactly around the time, I discovered minimalism through Kraig Adams and through him I found the minimalists and then found my way to the documentary ‘Minimalism’ on Netflix. I watched that documentary… and then rewatched it ten times.
Minimalism has been around a long time but since we have found ourselves in a consumer culture the last decade and with media influencing us everywhere we go, it has become more difficult to focus on what’s important and what matters to us. This is where minimalism can come into your life and help you out.
It is a way to look at the things you own and rethink about what you value most in life. The stuff you kept ‘just in case’ doesn’t matter. They are already eliminated from the pile that you can keep. Go through every piece you own whether it’s a book or clothing. Hold them in your hand and ask yourself if it makes you happy. This is more commonly known as the ‘Konmari Method’ created by Marie Kondo. She’s a genius.
In my journey to becoming a minimalist (which is still going on), I am finding myself getting more sleep, cleaning less and having less things to worry about. When you have less, you don’t have to clean as much as you used to and when you don’t have to do that, it gives you time to do other things. To go out with friends and have a good night sleep without all the worry that is clouding your mind.
Minimalism can not only be helpful to get rid of things but it can also serve a purpose when thinking about relationships you have with people. Get rid of those who are toxic to your life, who add no value or who are just down right annoying. Move forward having only the things and the people that matter to you.
A good way to start is the #30dayminimalismgame otherwise known as #minsgame. In this you pick a month where every day you get rid of things. On the first day of the month, you get rid of one thing, second day, two things, third day, three things, and so on until you get to day nineteen when it starts to get tricky. You have to get rid of nineteen things. Do this with someone to keep each other accountable and place your bets!
After that month, you will have gotten rid of at least 500 items. Doesn’t that sound amazing?
I’ve found nothing but benefits from minimalism and I highly suggest that you try it too. When you’ve got time of course ;)
