"Follow your dreams" you hear people say, but is that always achievable?
When you're a kid you always say: I want to be ...
That's your dream and some dreams differ from others. One wants to be a firefighter and the other an artist. As we get older our interests lean towards every direction possible. Because we want to explore, we want to broaden our interests, we want to see what actually sticks.
Growing up I was always looking for that one thing, that one thing that would stick. Stick around long enough for me to actually go after it. I’m talking about a passion, your passion. You might me wondering: “What are you talking about?” Even though it might take us all a while to understand it, we all have a passion. Whether that is a passion for cooking, dancing, teaching, photography etc. We all have it.
For me, at least it has been for the past 2 years, is photography and film. Now more interested than ever, I started doing lots of different things to promote myself or do things to see if I actually like it and don't worry, I actually do.
It took me a while to figure it out, but I think I’ve finally figured it out. But as it turns out, now that I have found it, I might not be able to pursue it. I want to be a filmmaker or a photographer at least in that area, but my family isn’t behind my decision. Yes, you have to do it for yourself and it is your life, but I can’t help to want some kind of approval from them.
Approval that I have always seeked for as long as I can remember. However, just like every single one of us, I have to graduate from high school first. But by working hard and keep pushing forward, I will graduate in two years and pursue my passion, because I have been looking for it for years. I’m not doing this to spit on my family, I’m doing this simply, because I want to show them that I defied the odds and am successful in what I do, whatever that may be. I know the risk, I know my chances, but I have to. I find my happiness in everything that evolves around my passion. I’m doing this for me.
I'm growing up and I have to look at my future plans, but my mind has been more unclear than ever. I am leaning towards doing film school, but as I said: My family doesn't exactly agree with the idea of that future plan.
You'd say: 'That hurts' and believe me it does. Pursuing your dreams isn't a bad thing, but there will always be this level of uncertainty that might scare you. It scares me, because what if my family is right? what if it is too risky? what if I can't do it?
The question lots of people ask themselves daily. It's a scary one. There's so much uncertainty and fear behind it that we don't know what to do. Some people say "screw what if, let's just do it!"
But those people usually have a good back up plan. And I .... don't. For now, it's going to be all about the hard work and getting that high school certificate, besides I have time.
But as they say: "Time moves faster than you think" so we shall see where I stand next year, two or even 5 years from now.
With this article I would like to say: Pursue your passions, your dreams, your aspirations, go after that one dream and defy the odds.
